Terri

I have been doing a lot of reflecting on family lately. It is hard to believe that from humble beginnings back in 1979 we have grown to a family of 18. It is so exciting to have them all in the house as we celebrate Christmas today. It really is amazing to watch the Grandchildren as they enjoy the company of their cousins. I know I don't always show it but it brings so much joy to me.

As I think about that I think back to where it all started. I remember the night we met. Brian thought we would be a good match so he invited you up to Dad's station to meet me. I believe we were installing headers on his 69 Camaro.

I remember looking up and there you were. Absolutely beautiful.... I am not sure I remember what we talked about but I sensed something that night that I could not explain.

I never really liked Mexican food but I started making a number of trips to Zantigos. I remember ordering a hot dog the first time. I just know it was worth the trip just to see you.

Then came that day when I asked you to marry me. (I still feel bad about how I did that. You deserved better! I am sorry for that!) I thank God that you said yes even in spite of that.

I think about our wedding vows. For better or worse! I am better because of you. For richer or poorer! It really does not matter as long as I am with you. In sickness and health! I would give anything to take away your pain.

You have blessed me more than you will ever know. I thank God for placing you in my life.

I am so looking forward to the rest of our years together.

I love you!

Mark

Election Night

I had to get away from the TV tonight.

Don't get me wrong. I care a great deal about the outcome of this election. I certainly have my opinions.

I am amazed about the amount of money we spend on these elections. We proclaim that we care about the jobless, the homeless, the people who are not quite as well off as others. But yet we spend billions on elections. Just imagine what that kind of money could do for the above mentioned groups.

Of course the ads don't do a thing to build up, to encourage, to spur interest in the process. No, they just tear people down. I would love to see ads that explain a candidates position and never mention the opposing candidate. I guess it just goes to show the old saying is right. "Tear somebody down so I can feel better about myself."

The sad part about all of this is that many Christians have bought into this style of politics. It is OK to tear somebody down, to call them names because they have a different opinion or value system than us. We are all God's children. He loves us all. Have we Christians become Pharisee's?

No matter what happens tonight I know that God is still on the throne. I know that Jesus will be seated to his right. I believe our God is greater than any politician, any system. That is where I choose to place my hope!

I do believe that we Christians must get back to Matthew 22:36-40.

Grandma Rene Reassurance

I share this story with permission from my wife Terri.

Terri was able to visit with Grandma a couple weeks ago. She had fallen and was in the hospital. It was obvious that she was reflecting on her life. She talked about the good times and she talked about some regrets. I believe she was working thru these things to come to peace with them.

Here is what Terri and I find so exciting. Grandma Rene started telling Terri about her experience with Jesus. She saw Jesus in her room and Jesus spoke to her saying "I am coming back for you in a little while".

Jesus came as promised a couple weeks later. We could not ask for better assurance of where Grandma Rene is today. With Jesus in heaven!

It seems to me that Jesus has made this promise before. To all of us. Are you ready? Am I ready?

Jesus keeps his promises.

Till next time...

Grandma Rene

Grandma Rene went home to be with the Lord last week Monday. She was 97.

Rene was Terri's Grandmother. Many years ago Rene accepted me right into the family. She always made me feel welcome and a part of the family.

So many memories. She loved to talk baseball. She was a Brewers fan and I was a White Sox fan. That created some lively debates. We agreed on one thing in baseball. Neither one of us were Reggie Jackson fans. She would always say "he makes me so mad I could just spit"

She came to visit and help when each of our children were born. What a huge blessing that was.

She taught us how to can, make salsa, and the like. We had a mulberry tree in our front yard. I could not stand the mess it made in the yard. One day I came home to some homemade mulberry jam. I liked that tree after that.

I had heard that she was very good at the polka. I was blessed to watch her dance at the nursing home a few years ago. Still as smooth and graceful as ever.

She loved the marble game aggravation. She always had to have the white marbles and had a unique ability to roll box cars. She would play that game for hours. Of course so did we and we loved it.

We would always stop by the nursing home to see her on our way out of town. I really missed making that stop this time.

We are going to miss you Grandma but someday soon we will see you again. Wonder what it will be like to play marbles in heaven? Can't wait!

Day 90

On May 1st a number of men from KFA embarked on a challenge to read the Bible in 90 days. Today is day 90. I have read the Bible in 90 days.... Thank You men for the support and encouragement. It was an honor to go on this journey with you. I would love to hear from you regarding your experiences.

So, what did I learn?

I learned that God is faithful! OK, I had head knowledge of his faithfullness. After reading example after example of God's faithfullness I believe that understanding has moved into my heart.

I have so many thoughts running through my head right now that I can't figure out what to write. Totally lost right now. Who knows, maybe they will come out in future blogs. There is so much that I have read and learned.

Here is what really excites me now. I know that God's word does not return void. What is God doing in my heart right now that I cannot see or feel? What is God doing that I don't know about yet? The knowledge is great but I am looking for heart transformation. And since our Gois faithfull I am sure he will oblige.

By God's grace I was able to conquer this challenge. I think most men love to beat a good challenge.

So what is next?
  • Jump out of a perfectly good airplane?
  • Climb Mount Kilamanjaro?
  • P90X?
  • Run a marathon?
Till next time...

Doubting Thomas

When I think of Thomas (Didymus) I recall him doubting the resurrection of Jesus. Then I read John 11:16.

Jesus had received word that Lazarus was sick. Yet Jesus waited  2 days before he said to the disciples, "let us go back to Judea" verse 7.

Now Judea was the place where they wanted him dead so this was a huge risk to Jesus and his disciples. After a bit of discussion Thomas speaks up in verse 16. Then Thomas (called Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, Let us also go, so that we may die with him.

Even faced with death he remained loyal to Jesus. Even though he did not fully understand he remained loyal to Jesus.

Here Thomas is loyal to Jesus but later he doubts. How often do I go back and forth between loyalty, obedience and then doubt or not understanding. How about you?

#B90X Day 74

To all of you KFA men who took the #B90X challenge I applaud you! This has been an exciting and revealing journey so far. We are coming down the home stretch with only 16 days left.

I encourage you to finish strong. If you are behind, that is OK. But finish, no matter whether it is 90 days or 120.

I have been blessed beyond measure by this challenge. By meeting with you men on Sunday mornings and discussing what we have read. You have helped me understand things I did not get. You have brought to my attention things that I missed. I Thank all of you for that.

I really believe that this challenge will be a springboard to furthur Bible study for many men including myself.

So again, I encourage you to finish strong.

Till next time...

Hosea

When the Lord began to speak through Hosea, the Lord said to him, “Go, marry a promiscuous woman and have children with her, for like an adulterous wife this land is guilty of unfaithfulness to the Lord.”

Obedience can be difficult. Could you or would you marry a women who was an adulteress or you knew in advance she would be unfaithful?

How about the comparison of an adulteress woman and the people's unfaithfullness to the Lord. Do you think our land is any different today? Does this comparison still apply?

The Lord said to me, “Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another man and is an adulteress. Love her as the Lord loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods and love the sacred raisin cakes.
So I bought her for fifteen shekels[a] of silver and about a homer and a lethek[b] of barley. Then I told her, “You are to live with me many days; you must not be a prostitute or be intimate with any man, and I will behave the same way toward you.”

OK God! You want me to what? Buy her back from the man she is fooling around with? And I am supposed to love her? Are you serious? OK, I don't get it but OK.

Back to the comparison, Love her as the Lord loves the Iraelites! Even though they turn to other Gods.

This speaks volumes to me. First of all I am guilty! I am guilty of sin, of allowing other idols into my life. But the Lord loves me (you) in spite of that. He loves me (you) so much he wants me (you) to turn back to him. It does not mean there will not be consequences for my (your) sin. What more can I ask for than to have a God (the Alpha and Omega, the one true God) who loves me and wants to have relationship with me.

What do you think?

#B90X Day 64

Isn't it amazing how God continues to get his people in positions of authority? Now, Daniel is a most trusted advisor to Darius. Not only that but Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah hold prominent positions in the Babylonian government.

Do you recognize those 3 names? How about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego? How about the fiery furnace? Now how is it that these 3 were tossed in the fiery furnace, extra hot I might add, but Nebuchadnezzar sees 4 men walking in the furnace? Who do you think the 4th man was?

Sorry, got away from Daniel. Apparently the ability to intrepret dreams was a big deal back in the day. This is what got Daniel into his prominent position.

As a kid the story of Daniel and the lions den fascinated me. As an adult it still does. Throw a stone over the entrance. Just Daniel and the lions chillin. I find it interesting that the King came first thing in the morning to check on Daniel. Wonder what he was thinking as he approached? Daniel is fine, not a scratch. I know what you are thinking! The lions just were not hungry right? I don't think so. The false accusers with there wives and children were tossed in the lions den. Before they reached the floor of the den they were overpowered and their bones crushed. What was the difference?

God is faithful! God is in control! Do you believe that? Do you live life trusting a faithful God?

Do I??? Daniel did!

Day 59

On day 59 of the #B90X reading plan we moved into Ezekiel.

Did you know that Ezekiel was a street preacher in Babylon for 22 years?

How about that he lied on his side for 390 days with only one 8 oz.meal cooked over manure a day?

He shaved his head and beard. I have read this before so this must have been a big deal back in the day. If you can explain this to me I would love to hear from you.

He showed no sorrow when his wife died.

I am almost afraid to write this but I think God is taking it easy on us. Are the things he is asking us to do really that tough?

#B90X Day 56

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans I have for you, "declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

This is one of my favorite verses. Why can't I rest in this promise? Or am I?

Till next time...

#B90X DAY 54

On day 54 we moved into the book of Jeremiah.

For 40 years Jeremiah was God's spokesman to Judah. For 40 years the people of Judah did not listen or respond. Not exactly E.F. Hutton I guess.

Here are some other highlights of his career.
  • he was thrown in prison
  • he was thrown into a cistern
  • he was taken to Eygpt against his will
  • rejected by his neighbors, his family, the false prophets, his audience, friends, and the kings.
  • He was poor
How do you do that? 40 years with no one listening. No one changing their ways. Could you do that?

What prophets are speaking into your life right now, but you are ignoring because you do not like the message?

Oh, I almost forgot the most important highlight.

God loved Jeremiah. Why? He was true to his calling. He persevered through it all.

Jeremiah 1:4-5 The word of the Lord came to me, saying, 5 "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."

Are you fulfilling God's calling on your life? I ask this of myself as well.

#B90X Day 49

The reading moves into Isaiah, considered to be the greatest Old Testament prophet. Somebody mentioned to me the other day that there are 3 key areas a man needs to be to lead his family. They were Prophet, King, and Priest.

Prophet was the one that really caught my attention. Not that I fully understand the other 2 but what is a prophet. A prophet's role is to speak for God. To confront and challenge people with God's commands and promises.

As I read Isaiah, Jeremiah, and now Ezekiel I wonder why anyone would want to be a prophet. It sure seems like there is a lot of doom and gloom being foretold. It kind of reminds me of the street corner preacher who is preaching nothing but hell and damnation. Who wants to be that guy? It does not seem to be the way to win friends.

Ahh, but that is not what this is about is it? Winning friends.

Isaiah 6:8 "Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? and who will go for us? And I said, "Here am I. send me"

Did you catch that word "us"? God and Isaiah, us.

The more I think about this prophet thing I realize it is about hope. It is a warning, an opportunity to change direction before the consequences become severe. It is the call we are getting from God to turn back to him.

You know, I am OK with being a prophet in my family. Here am I Lord, send me!

How about you guys? Are you willing to join me?

Till next time...

B90X Day 48

As I told you in the last post I am going back and reviewing some of the earlier days readings.

Todays reading was Ecclesiastes 3:1 through Song of Songs 8:14.

Sorry guys, I am not going to write about Song of Songs. At least not in this post. I want to talk about Ecclesiastes.

Here is Solomon the wisest man around, loaded with wealth and everything a man could ever desire, talking about how meaningless it all is. If this is the case why do we men spend so much time effort and energy working for advancement? Why do we have to have the nice boat, or nice new car? The nicest house or the best landscaped place in the neighborhood?

Let me ask a question. What is the response you get when you ask another man how thing's are going?
  1. The highly descriptive answer, "Fine" or "Good"
  2. Oh man, work is just crazy right now. It's just too busy.
  3. My wife____ I will stay away from this one.
When was the last time the response was "Let me tell you what God is doing in my life!"

I don't think Solomon is saying that these things are bad. Chapter 5:18-20 says we should find satisfaction in our toil. We should enjoy our possessions and wealth. This is a gift from God.

Apart from God though all these things are meaningless.

Till next time...

Struggle

I have to admit that I am struggling with what to write on this blog. I do continue to keep pace with the #B90X reading plan.

I think right now I am missing what God is trying to speak into me. With that being said, today I am going back to Day 48 and reviewing each days reading as well as staying current.

Hopefully my heart will hear what God is speaking to me.

I might even blog about it.

B90X Day 47

Proverbs 24:11-12

11 Rescue those being led away to death;
hold back those staggering toward slaughter,
12  If you say, "But we knew nothing about this,"
does not he who weighs the heart perceive it?
Does not he who guards your life know it?
Will he not repay each person according to what he has done?

I think what he is trying to say is "God knows!"

Proverbs B90X Day 46

I have learned that Proverbs has 3 main sections.
  1. Wisdom for young people!
  2. Wisdom for all people!
  3. Wisdom for the Leaders!
Proverbs 1:7 "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline."

Chapter 2 talks about the moral benefits to wisdom. I think this is a chapter to read frequently. There sure seems to be a lot of warnings against the adulteress.

Chapter 2:16 "It will save you from the adulteress, from the wayward wife with her seductive words."

Chapter 5:3&4 "For the lips of an adulteress drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil. but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a two edged sword.

Chapter 6:24-25 "keeping you from immoral women, from the smooth tongues of the wayward wife. Do not lust in your heart after her beauty, or let her captivate you with her eyes.

Chapter 7:4-5 "Say to wisdom, "you are my sister," and call understanding your kinsman. they will keep you from the adulteress, from the wayward wife with her seductive words.

There seems to be a common theme here. DO WE GET IT GUYS? I can you hear you now. Your saying I got this under control, I understand this, you don't have to worry about me.

If that is the case than why do you think God is repeating this over and over to us. Too many families being ripped apart because a man is thinking with the wrong ______! Even in the church guys.

To all of you that really do have this figured out, that is awesome. Teach the benefits to other men.

Till next time...

Half Way Day 45

Congratulations guys.... We are halfway through #B90X. Way to go!!!! That is a huge accomplishment.

Looking forward to another great 45 days.

Baseball B90X

OK, what does baseball have to do with B90X?

Nothing really. I just thought I would take a moment to share what is going on in my life right now. I am blessed to be able to help coach my 2 oldest Grandsons baseball team.

The Gators, a collection of young men 6-8 years old who are just learning the game. What a joy it is to teach and encourage these young men. We lost tonight but the boy's played hard and have really improved since the first game. I love being out there with them.

On another note Terri and I celebrated our 33rd anniversary this last weekend. I really have no idea how she has put up with me all these years.

I don't like to preach guys but God is laying this on my heart real strong right now.

YOUR INVESTMENT IN YOUR FAMILY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR INVESTMENT IN YOUR WORK.

Till next time...

Day 40 B90X

The reading has really changed as we move into Psalms. I hate to say it but I miss all the action that we have read up to this point.

I am not sure yet how to write about the Psalms. I did learn that the Psalms is split into 5 dominant themes. They align with the 5 books of Moses. I am sure you all knew that but that was a revelation to me.

Sorry guys, slow learner here.

I would love to hear what scripture from Psalms really got your attention. Please post your responses.

Till next time....

Job

The book of Job has still got me thinking. There is so much there that I feel like I barely understand.

Satan hanging out with the angels. Is this just Job's words or is it true that Satan has to be allowed by God to attack us? If so why does God allow Satan to attack a righteous man like Job? Isn't that what God wants from us?

How about Job's 3 friends. They did really great till they opened their mouths. They reasoned that Job had to have sinned to have this much trouble. Yet they spoke without having all of the details. Kind of makes me think of the people who say you have a disease or illness because you have sin in your life. Sure doesn't seem like that is always the case if you read Job. But, what do I know.

I wonder how often I offer advice without knowing all of the details? Probably more than I care to admit.

Anyways, Job maintains his righteousness all the way thru. Chapter 38 was brought to my attention by a good friend. I love verse 3, God is now speaking to Job. "Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me."

Then God proceeds to ask Job some questions that certainly put into perspective who I am and who God is.

Till next time...

Friends Day 35

I have read Job a few times and always was focused on Job and his challenges. A little different insight this time.

Job 2:11, Job's 3 friends meet and decide to go and sympathize with and comfort him.

When they saw Job they began to weep aloud, they tore their robes and sprinkled dust on their heads. They sat on the ground with him and not a word is spoken. How long did this go on? I don't know about you but I can barely stand 5 minutes of silence. (Unless of course I am in my nothing box)

7 DAYS AND 7 NIGHTS!   Silence, nothing spoken. I guess this was Jewish custom when comforting a friend. They said nothing till Job spoke.

I think this is an awesome example of friendship in a time of need.

So what happens when Job finally speaks? His 3 buddies decide to fix him. Oh, Job, you must have committed a terrible sin. You must repent. Did they really think they understood his situation better than Job did?

I think I need to do a better job of just being there.
I think I need to do a better job of keeping my mouth shut.
I think I need to do a better job of just listening.

Maybe that was enough for Job!

Till next time...

Job Day 35

I really feel God used the Day 35 reading to reveal some things to me. That is why I have more than one post for this day's reading. Read my earlier post on Haman and how rage and pride has such a negative impact on our lives.

For this post I would like you to read. PLEASE

Job 1:6
Job 2:1
Job 2:9 I just had to throw this one in. Great encouragement from his wife!

The angels came to present themselves to the Lord. Makes sense right!

Did you notice who came with them? Satan!!!

Till next time...

Haman Day 35

We read about Haman in Esther chapters 3 thru 7.

I think this guy had a real pride issue. He could not stand the fact that Mordecai would not bow down to him. He was so enraged that he not only wanted to kill Mordecai but to kill all of the Jews thruout the whole kingdom. So the plotting begins.

Fast forward to Esther 5:9 Haman's ego is flying high. He is the only invited guest to a banquet with Esther and the King. He brags about his vast wealth, how the King honored him and placed him higher than all the other nobles. All of this and he still is not satisfied. Mordecai is in his head big time.

This is the cool part. Haman builds the gallows for Mordecai but little does he know it will be used on him.

Esther 6:1   Check this out, why do you think the King could not sleep. What prompted him to read the chronicles of his reign. Thus allowing him to find out about Mordecai.

Rage filled Haman so much so that he could see nothing else.

He was also filled with pride.

They say pride comes before the fall! I got to ask God to reveal where pride is holding me back.

There is a lot more to this story. I would encourage you to read it. 5 short chapters with a plenty that relates to our lives today.

Till next time...

Nehemiah day 35

So what did Nehemiah do when he heard of the disrepair of the walls and the gates of Jerusalem.

He wept, fasted and prayed for many days. Pretty much the same thing you and I would do right?

What's the next thing he does? He prays some more. He asked for favor from God before he did anything else.

Under Nehemiah's leadership the walls and the gates were rebuilt in 52 days. AMAZING

I really admire how Nehemiah went to God in prayer first.

Why does it seem that the men of the old testament had a much more passionate prayer life? I wonder if we are getting way too comfortable with God's grace and have lost our fear of the Lord?

Shecaniah Day 34

Ezra 10:1-4

I think Ezra is a man I would like to know more about. He has led the 2nd group of exiles back to Jerusalem. He is a priest, scribe and a great leader. In chapter 9 he finds out that the people of Israel including the priests and Levites had not kept themselves seperate from the neighboring people. They had mingled the holy race with others.

Ezra 9:3 When he heard this. He tore his cloak and tunic, pulled hair from his head and beard and sat down appalled till the evening sacrifice.

Ezra 9:5 referred to his "self-abasement" Not being an English scholar I had to look this up. Here is the definition:  Humiliation or abasement proceeding from consciousness of inferiority, guilt, or shame.

This was not Ezra's sin but yet he felt deep guilt for the sins of the people.

Ezra 9:6-15 This is Ezra's prayer. Take a moment to read it.

Ezra 10:1-4 Here is where Shecaniah comes into the picture. Shecaniah speaks up as Ezra is still praying. He acknowledges their sin but in spite of this he recognizes there is still HOPE!

He offers a solution and then he does it. Vs. 4 "Rise up, this matter is in your hands. We will support you, so take courage and do it." I got to say I love this. Shecaniah speaks up, offers a solution, challenges Ezra, and offers support. He's telling Ezra let's do what we know is right. We don't need more prayer. We already know what to do. God gave us the answer a long time ago.

I suspect this Shecaniah dude was a pretty good leader in his own right.

Obedience

I just wanted to share something that I read this morning. Straight out of my NIV Bible study notes on Hezekiah.

  • "Past obedience to God does not remove the possibility of present disobedience"

Till next time...

Wondering

 I keep hearing people talk about how the world today is so bad, so far away from God. On the surface I get that but reading the Old Testament makes me wonder;

What's up with all of the genealogy? Was it really neccessary to go over it again in Chronicles?

Why did God feel it was neccessary to repeat things. Did we need all of the details for the temple twice.

If we could interview God,
  • How would he respond to comparing the people of todays world with the people of the Old Testament times?
  • How would he explain the importance of the genealogy?
  • Why is it we need to be told or asked more than once? Especially us men.
B90X has been a wonderful challenge for me. Writing about it has been an even bigger challenge. I am so glad that I am though. It has renewed my passion for reading and understanding. It has also created all kinds of questions, things to research and study up on when I am done with B90X.

What are you wondering about?

Day 27

OK, guys, I have caught up and am current on the reading. Got to save those 2 grace days for later.

Hope you are all having a great Memorial Day weekend. Not much to write right now.

Heading back to visit with family.

Dedication

I must confess. I did not read yesterday.

I will tell you that May 26th 2012 will be remembered as one of the most special days of my life.

I had the honor of dedicating my youngest Granddaughter Ryleigh Lynn Baldwin to the Lord. Family and Friends gathered at Lake Michigan at 11am. The rain stopped and the sun shone thru as we walked to the beach. Against the back ground sound of the Lake Michigan surf we baptized and dedicated Ryleigh.

Thank You John and Sara for allowing me this honor.

To all you men out there. I encourage you to take the lead in your family. You lead your children to Christ, You baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. You set the example of how to follow Christ.

Proverbs 22:6 says, Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

Men, This is you responsibility. Not your wives or the churches. They are there to help you, but

You are the Priest of your home.

Good Luck and God Bless

Day 25

1 Kings 7:38 thru 16:20.

OK guys, we are 25 days into this 90 day challenge. Hope you are all doing well.

I want to say to all who are current, GREAT JOB! Even if you have fallen behind I encourage you to keep at it.

I am finding that most days something just jumps out and grabs my attention. Yet again I have had a couple days, like today that I feel like I missed it.

After Solomon the King's reign seemed to get real short. It's about all I got today.

Thank You to those who have served and sacrificed for our country. May God richly bless you!

Hope you all have a great weekend

Till next time...

Day 24 Wisdom

I knew that Solomon was a wise man.

In 1 Kings 3:5 God appeared to Solomon in a dream and said, "Ask for whatever you want me to give you."

OK, Right now before you read any furthur, what would you ask for?

Solomon responded that he was but a child and did not know how to carry out his duties. He asked for a discerning heart to govern the people. This pleased God as Solomon did not ask for great wealth or a long life or the death of his enemies.

So what does God do? He does give Solomon a wise and discerning heart. AND God gave him what he did not ask for. He gave him riches and honor so that there would be no equal in his lifetime.

Maybe I should ask for wisdom more often! OK, maybe the wrong motive right now, but I do think there is a life principle here.

Solomon's wisdom was:
  • greater than all the wisdom of the east
  • greater than all the wisdom of Egypt
  • he was wiser than any other man
  • he spoke three thousand proverbs
  •  his songs numbered one thousand and five
  • he taught about plant and animal life
Men of all nations came to listen to his wisdom.

2 Samuel 22:25

The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight.

Day 22 David

I think somebody needs to make a movie about David's life. This could be a real man's movie.

God rejects Saul as King and sends Samuel to Jesse of Bethlehem because God has picked out the next King. I bet you can guess by now what is going to happen. God chooses the youngest son, David.

Something about his heart!

So David is annointed and the power of God comes upon him. Next thing you know David is serving Saul as a harp player. When David played it brought relief to Saul.

Pretty good stuff right here. New King serving old King. Do you think either of them knew it yet?

Then comes the killing of Goliath. I still can't get over the picture of David carrying this guys head around with him and taking it to see Saul.

David becomes friends with Jonathan. I suspect that Hollywood would really screw this part up. This is where Saul gets upset with David. It seems the people had a little song:

"Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands."

You think Saul had a little pride issue?

Now Saul wants to kill David. The pursuit begins. God is on David's so he is able to get away just in time. Kind of like the movies today. Saul pursues, David hides, there are battles.  This goes on like a , well at least a few chapters.

The cave scene, David and his men hidden far back in the cave, Saul comes in to relieve himself. (is this the only time this is mentioned in the bible, somebody relieving themselves?) What does David do, he sneaks up on Saul and                                                 kills him? No, he cuts off a piece of Sauls robe. I don't get it.

Again David spares Sauls life. Saul is sleeping as are his men. David walks thru them all right up to Saul. Could have killed him again. Instead he walks off with Sauls spear and water jug.

David hooks up with the Philistines for a year.

These are just a few of the highlights. There is so much more. This could be an 8 hour blockbuster.

Here is the thing that surprised me. This all happened during David's first 30 years. He was finally crowned King of Israel at 30 years of age. This is just the beginning. He would serve as King for 40 years.

Sounds like David Part II may be coming.

Till next time...

Day 21 David

1 Samuel 16 thru 28:19

Have you ever heard the story about David and Goliath? I know, probably the one story that most all of us heard as kids.

Again God uses the youngest. Why did David have no fear when other older more experienced fighters ran from Goliath? 5 stones, 1 shot and a dead Goliath. I know this is not a deep theological question but I got to ask. Why would David cut off Goliath's head and carry it home with him? Not only that but he carries it with him to meet the king! Do you think he mounted it on his wall at home?

Till next time...

Day 20

Here we are finishing day 20. We have read Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, (that was a blast wasn't it?) Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, and now we are into 1 Samuel.

I have to tell you I had doubts about making it this far. I have never read the bible front to back in my life let alone do it in 90 days. But I am glad that I accepted the challenge.

I have to say the naysayers were WRONG! The bible is coming alive. I am learning more than I thought possible. And you know what is really cool, I have more questions. When the 90 days is done I can search out those answers as well.

I met again this morning with some other guys doing B90X. If you are doing B90X and have not joined us please do so. 9am, south commons @ KFA. It adds another dimension to the B90X experience.

Loving it!

Day 19

To Unknown,

Here you go, Day 19. We finished Judges and Ruth today and moved into 1 Samuel.

Naomi and Ruth are an example of a good relationship. A blending of lives. Their family backgrounds, culture and age were very different. I would encourage you to read Ruth if you have not done so. Building relationships requires an investment of time.

Tonight, Terri and I invested time and took 2 of our Grandsons to see Charlotte's Web performed by the Christian Youth Theatre. Tyler and Austin loved the show. In talking with them afterward I was impressed by their thoughts.

We ended the night having dinner with good friends. Got to say it was a good night.

Till next time...

Day 18 Gideon

Judges 6:36-40....Gideon says to God, I will place a wool fleece on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece and the ground is dry, then I will KNOW that you will save Israel by my hand.

And what happens? God obliges Gideon. He gets a bowlful of water out of the fleece.

Gideon gets the confirmation he asked for but is that enough? NO!!! He asks for another test. This time he asks for dew on the ground and the fleece to stay dry.

Again God obliges... Give Gideon credit, he gets it on the 2nd test.

How many confirmations do I need? You?

Till next time...

Day 18

I am running a little behind on the blog as this is for yesterdays reading. I am surprised by how well men are keeping up with the reading. I am hearing from a lot of men that they really like reading the bible this way.

Keep up the good work guys.....

Joshua 23:8 "But you are to hold fast to the Lord your God, as you have until now."
Joshua 23:10 "One of you routs a thousand, because the Lord your God fights for you, just as he promised."

I understand what this means in this context. The numbers are stacked against them. It is impossible except that God is going before them. They just had to step out in obedience. Hold fast to God.

Do you think this principle still works today? What seemingly impossible odds are you facing? What would happen if You or I stepped out in faith, against the odds, trusting that God is going before us?

Just a thought.

Till next time...

Finally

Today we read Joshua 1 thru 14. The Israelites finally enter the Promised land. We tend to talk a lot more about God parting the Red Sea when they fled from Egypt. But here we are again with water in the way. As soon as the priests carrying the ark of the covenant stepped into the Jordan River the flow of water was cut off and it piled up like a wall. Please understand that the Jordan was at flood stage. Again they crossed over on dry land.

Here is what amazes me, the priests stand in the middle of the Jordan holding up the ark of the covenant until all of the Israelites (1 million, 2 million?) crossed over. And then they had to wait for Joshua to pick a man from each tribe, 12 in all, to each gather a stone from the middle of the Jordan.  Why? Read chapter 4. When this was done Joshua ordered the ark of the covenant to be brought over. As soon as the priests stepped out of the river bed the water resumed flowing.

I can't help but wonder. How long did this all take? Were there relief priests? A changing of the guard?

You ever heard the story of the sun standing still, stopped in mid day for about a full day? All because Joshua asked for it. There has to be more to this story. I think someone even wrote a book about it.

Day 17 tomorrow. We finish up Joshua and move into Judges.

Till next time...

Perspective

I have been thinking about perspective lately.

I find that the more I focus on my problems the bigger they become. I can make them REALLY big. They drag me down, I get crabby, I get down and just want to crawl in my shell. Just leave me alone...

You ever feel that way? Do you focus on your problems?

I don't understand why I do that. After all, I have experienced the joy that only comes from focusing on Jesus. I have learned that if I place my trust with him the problems are not so big anymore.

Have you found that to be true in your life? Why do we focus on our problems when we know God is in control? When we know he has our best interest at heart. When we know that he loves us more than we could ever imagine.

It seems to me the Israelites lost their perspective a few times in those 40 years.

Perspective? I think I need a perspective adjustment.

Personal

I have to tell you that the last 2 weeks have been an emotional roller coaster. I love the reading and am inspired by it. Knowing how God showed himself faithful to the Israelites. How God showed us his holiness. How he took a man named Moses and made him into a great leader.  How he kept his promises.

Yes the reading has been good for me.

During the last 2 weeks though, Satan has attacked relentlessly. I was a beaten man on Friday. I'd had enough. I was tired and did not feel I had anything left. Life does that sometimes to us. I do not say this to bring attention to my situation, just that if it's important for Satan to try and derail me than I believe it is all the more important for me to persevere.

I don't believe Satan likes the fact that a bunch of men have committed to reading the Bible. In unity and passion. I think Satan knows what will happen when a bunch of men allow the word of the Living God to transform us.

I intend on staying the course. I intend on fighting the good fight. I intend on finishing the race set before me.

How do I know? Because our God is a faithful God. He is a Holy God. This is about the great I AM. He will carry me through. I rest in that promise.

How about you?

Day 13

I met with a group of men this morning who are doing B90X. We meet every Sunday morning @ KFA.

It is always good to meet with a group of men who are unified in purpose. You guys are a great source of encouragement to me.  Thank You

After today's reading I am again impressed with Moses. Here is a guy who told God that he needed someone to speak for him because that was not his gift. So God gave him Aaron.

Here we are in Deuteronomy and we have read the first of Moses 4 addresses to the Israelites. (no mention of a teleprompter here) The man can speak.....

If you have not read Deuteronomy, I would encourage you to do so. Tremendous lessons for us today in this book.

Till next time...

Yesterday

I hope this finds you all doing well.

I want to encourage all of you to keep plugging away. You CAN do it! I am finding that I am looking forward to each days reading. It is not always easy but it is well worth it.

Picture this.... You are gathered with your small group and in walks Balaam. He starts to tell his story. We listen with fascination and then he gets to the donkey. He loads up his donkey and heads off to see Balak. At some point the donkey sees the angel of the Lord and turns off into a field. What does Balaam do, he beats the donkey. At this point he lost all of you who are PETA fans.

They continue on and again the donkey sees the angel of the Lord in a narrow path and he moves over as far as he could and crushes Balaams foot against the wall. Another beating. The 3rd time the donkey sees the angel of the Lord he lays down under Balaam. Another beating follows.

Then Balaam does it, he tells you the donkey talked to him. Not only did the donkey talk with him but he answered the donkey. He had conversation with him. He tells the donkey that he made a fool of him. Seems to me he has to look pretty foolish talking to a donkey.

Would you believe his story at this point?

Now God opens Balaam's eyes so he could see the angel of the Lord. He now saw what the donkey saw.

Why do you think Balaam did not see the angel of the Lord?

Great story... How does it pertain to your life today? Think about it.

Till next time...

First Chance

Moses sends the 12 spies into Canaan to explore the land. They were to gather intelligence. So for 40 days they explore this land. Yes, it does flow with milk and honey is the report. 10 of the spies though talked about how powerful the people were. and their cities were fortified and very large.

Caleb has no fear, his report says they can take them. Then in Numbers 14 Joshua and Caleb said to not be afraid of the people. The Lord is with us...We will swallow them up.

Yesterday I talked about God sized dreams. Seeking opportunities that are bigger than us. I bet God has already spoke those dreams into many of you. so I got to ask here, Who are you listening to? The ones who let fear guide their lives? The one who does not want to see you succeed? The one who is playing on your own fears? The "it can't be done crowd?"

Or are you listening to Caleb and Joshua? The ones who recognize that God is on their side and with him ALL things are possible.

How many times did God promise this land to them? How many miracles did he perform? How many plagues did he bring on Pharoah? They witnessed all of this and yet still did not trust him to give them the land he promised. They blew their first chance at the Promised land.

You might say, no big deal, they got there eventually. Well they lost 40 years. 1 year for every day the spies were in Canaan. Those who disobeyed did not get to the Promised land at all. Moses did not make it. They died.

As I write this I am asking myself, what dream has God laid on my heart? What am I allowing to hold me back? Do I trust God? Have I truly surrendered to him? I know the Christian answer is YES I am surrendered. Yes I do trust him. And the truth is I do trust him. At least in my head. But do I live my life that way?

I wondered why God wanted me to write this blog. Now I know.... He is using it to speak into my life!

Till next time...

Numbers Day 10

I went to the CLS concert tonight. I was impressed with the talent. A special shout out to Rachel. Great job. For some reason I did not realize how many Israelites there were. 603,550 men over 20. Now you add the women and children. I wonder what that total was? Any ideas? Then throw in all the herds and flocks. Can you visualize that scene? That had to be impressive. I am beginning to understand why Moses had the "who me" questions. I think I can understand what he was thinking. This was way bigger than him. I got to say I am real impressed with Moses leadership skills. If Moses can why can't you. Come on guys, let's pray for opportunities that are bigger than us. And when we get them let's go after them knowing that God is with us. On another note. I know there are a couple people that read this. I would love to hear what your God sized dreams are. So, please comment on the post. Give me a call if you have my number. I want to hear how God is challenging you. Till next time...

B90X Day 8

Leviticus 1 thru 14 today.... All about offerings.. I found this to be a very challenging read today.

I read somewhere that God had brought the Israelites out of Egypt and now he was working on taking Egypt out of the Israelites. Makes sense to me.

Other than that I have nothing tonight.

B90X Day 7

Today we read Exodus chapter 29 thru chapter 40. WOW

Have you ever seen so many details? All this detail, all of this work and I don't believe there was any record of the Israelites grumbling. Amazing how we can work for the Lord when the details are laid out for us.

Don't you wish God would speak with such clarity and detail to us? Hmhh, I just wonder if maybe he does speak to us with this kind of clarity. Maybe we are just too busy with our lives to hear with clarity. After all, how many guys out there chose not to read the Bible in 90 days because they are too busy?

To borrow a line from my son's,    "just sayin"

B90X Day 6

It was great to meet with a group of guys this morning that are going thru B90X. It was obvious from the start that these guys were passionate and committed. Thank You guys for inspiring me.

I came away with 2 key points in today's reading. At least to me and where I am today.

1. The responsibility that our spiritual leaders carry. In Exodus chapter 16 God gave very specific instructions about gathering the manna that rained down at night. It seems some of the Israelites chose to do it their own way even though their way did not work so well. verse 28 Then the Lord said to Moses, "How long will you refuse to keep my commands and my instructions?"

Just a few chapters prior Moses was doing everything he could to get out of this gig. Now God is calling him out because of a few people that would not follow.

Do you pray for your Pastor's? The leaders of your church?

2. The value of a brother in Christ. During the Israelites battle with the Amalekites Moses stood on the hill overlooking the battle with his staff. The same staff used to strike the Nile. When he held the staff above his head the Israelites were winning, but whenever he would lower the staff the Amalekites were winning. I love verse 12: When Moses hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up, one on one side, one on the other, so that his hands remained steady till sunset. As a result Joshua won the battle.

Do you have bothers in your life that will raise you up, encourage you, fight the battle with you? Better question yet, Are you that brother to someone else?

Till next time...

Day 5

Just a reminder.... Tomorrow @ 9am in the south commons @ KFA will be an opportunity for you to meet with other men who are doing B90X. I would love to see you there...

If by any chance there are men reading this blog that have not started to do the B90X let me encourage you to start. I have been inspired by my reading and the feedback I am getting from men. It is time well invested.

We started Exodus today and read much about a man named Moses. Isn't it amazing how God uses imperfect men. Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, and now Moses. Do you think Moses lacked confidence in himself? How many excuses did he have? But yet, God had confidence in him... Moses even needed another man to speak for him and God supplied. Is it just my imagination or did that lack of confidence thing go away the more Moses spoke to Pharaoh.

IF GOD HAS CALLED YOU, HE WILL SUPPLY WHAT YOU NEED TO COMPLETE HIS CALL.

Let's boldly go where God has called us to go. He will supply our needs, he will clarify the call as we move forward.

You see, we are the perfect candidates for God to use. Why? Because we are imperfect. Because we have fears and doubts. After all, is it about us or God?

Till next time...

B90X Day 4

I have to say that I value good friends. Over the years being involved in ministry to men I have met and gotten to know a lot of great guys.

Tonight was men's night out for our Friday night group. They helped me move a piano to my house. (Please don't ask me why and especially don't ask Terri.) Then we went out for dinner. Just a great night of relaxation (after the piano) and fellowship..

I can't overstate the value of good friends. If you are missing out in this area I would encourage you to get involved in a small group and invest time in relationships...

So tonight a special shout out to Dave Paielli, Pat Cowles, and Steve Dutler. You guys make me laugh, you challenge me and you encourage me. Life is so much better with you in it. Thanks

By the way, it seems there is great value in being able to interpret dreams.

B90X Day 3

One more day guys and we are done with Genesis. I got to say I am really enjoying the reading. Hope  you are too.

I just want to encourage all of you to press on.... We may be reading fast but I believe that God's word is going to fill your heart. It will be really cool to see how that manifests itself in your life....

What is the deal with Jacob? He has quite the story. Way too much to talk about here. But I do find Genesis chapter 32 interesting. Vs.24 Jacob wrestled with a man till daybreak. 25, the man could not overpower him so he touched the socket of Jacob's hip so that it was wrenched. 26, the man said let me go and Jacob says not until you bless me. 28, here we go again with a new name. Jacob is now Israel. Why? Because he had struggled with God and men and had overcome.

Was it really God that Jacob wrestled with? How does this relate to you or me, today?

I hate to say it but my wrestling or negotiating with God tends to be self centered not God centered.

How about you?

Till next time...

B90X Day 2

Can you have faith with doubt? If you have doubt does that mean you lack faith?

God tells Abraham to take Isaac to a place that God will show him and sacrifice him. WOW! Abraham left early the next morning with Isaac. He tells people that they will be back. Statement of faith? or I don't want to tell people that God has told me to sacrifice my only son? On the 3rd day Abraham looked up and saw the place. So he leaves the 2 servants that traveled with them to wait. He tells them they are going up to worship and would be back. Again Statement of faith? or afraid to tell them what he is really doing? Isaac says to him, we have the fire and the wood but we have nothing to sacrifice. Abraham says God will provide the lamb. Statement of faith? or I can't tell my only son I am about to sacrifice him?

What do you think? I would love to hear your comments.

B90X Day 1

Well, day one is in the books. I just want to encourage all of you men who have said I am going to do this... It took me 55 minutes today. I still worked my 9 hour day, I have time to do some yard work and even make dinner and still watch The Biggest Loser!

All that too say "I missed nothing today"

The question that is on my mind is this, Where was Adam when the serpent was speaking to Eve? My understanding is, he was right there. If this is true why didn't he speak up? Why didn't he lead? I mean, this guy heard straight from God himself. Did he wonder if he really heard God right? Was he mislead by a beautiful woman? Hungry? Greedy? Feeling like he was missing out on something? Wanted something he could not have?

Kind of makes me wonder what lies I am falling for? Do I have the courage to fight for God? My family? My extended family and friends? My church? All the time? Sometimes? Hardly ever?

How about you?

Till next time....

Oh yeah, almost forgot... I am not sure but I think I may be a descendant of Noah. :)

The Day Before

Tomorrow is May 1st. It is also the first day of the B90X reading plan. The first day of reading the entire Bible in 90 days. I still don't have a real plan. Do I get up earlier and read in the morning? Do I read at night before I go to bed? I wonder if I will have the discipline to do it...

It is bad enough that I am dealing with all of my own questions and doubts. It makes it harder when people within the Christian faith make reading the Bible into something negative. Things like "Why don't you pick a chapter and really study it" I guess because that is a Bible study and B90X is reading. Or, "that is just being legalistic". You HAVE to read so many chapters a day?

So, to all those who can't find it in their hearts to encourage men to crack open the Bible and read it I would suggest you keep your comments to yourselves. We are not interested in your negativity!

So, to all of the men out there that have accepted the B90X challenge, let us stand on Isaiah 55:11

"It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it."

Let us read the word that God has sent out. His promise is that it will ALWAYS return fruit..Let us see what God wants to accomplish in our lives.

Drywall

What a great weekend... I had the opportunity to serve with 2 professional drywall finishers this weekend. Not only that but they were great guys to "hang" with.

The weekend was spent @ Spencer Lake Christian Center finishing drywall.  You have to understand something here. I do not like doing drywall! So, Pat & Ralph, Thank You for your patience with me and the tips that you gave me. It was great to watch you guys use your skills. It certainly is not as easy as you guys make it look.

So, let me ask all of you, Where are you serving? Are you serving? I would love to hear about your serving experiences.

Not only is serving a great blessing to others but it blesses you also. You do NOT need any special skills. Just the willingness to step out and say "I am here to help"....

Let's serve!

Porn Weekend

I am honored to be part of a couples life group. At times we do something a little out of the ordinary. This last Sunday we got up early (4am) and traveled to North Ridge Church in Marshfield, Wi.

The purpose was to attend Porn Weekend. Not your ordinary title for a church service.

Craig Gross, the founder of xxxchurch.com was the guest speaker. It was refreshing to see this topic covered in church. It was also good for us men in the group to have our spouses learn more about this.

They say that pornography does not discriminate and based on my experience working with men for the last 10 years I would agree. It attacks the rich and the poor, lawyers, bankers, construction workers, all segments of society. It even attacks right in the church. We cannot deny that any longer. We cannot continue to pretend that it does not exist. It is so sad to see men admit they have a problem AFTER they have lost everything. Spouses, families, jobs, etc.

Just to be fair, this is not just a men's issue. 35% of all visitors to pornographic web sites are now women. If you survey the under 40 age group that percentage jumps up to 40%.

So, if you are tempted, or struggle with porn please check out http://www.xxxchurch.com/. This is a site that has resources to help you in this area. I would also encourage you to connect with a men's bible study. Chances are you will find other men who are or have struggled with pornography. They would love to walk the journey to freedom with you.

Thank you Craig and xxxchurch for following God's calling into this ministry.

Thank You North Ridge Church for having the courage to bring this issue out into the open.

I believe that God is calling men to a higher standard. A standard that has no room for bondage to sexual sin or pornography. A standard that will lead our families to follow Christ for generations to come.

I would love to hear what you think.

B90X?

For over 10 years I have led a Men's small group Bible study. This has been a tremendous blessing to me.

I recently asked my mentor "how do we improve Men's biblical understanding? Both the context and how it relates to us today?" "Shock them" was the response I received. Do B90X, read the bible in 90 days. My first response was to ask him what else he had, but I knew better than to ask. I knew he was both right and serious.

You see, I have not been able to read the entire bible in a year let alone 90 days. I had the usual thoughts that I would not have time, or if I read that fast I would not comprehend what I read. What holds you back?

But, the more I thought about it, the more I listened to God, the more excited I got. What a CHALLENGE!!!! Why can't I do it? I realized that I DO have time and God has promised that his word will not return VOID.

So, this weekend Kenosha First Assembly will be presenting this challenge to the men.... I hope that you will join us on this journey. I can't wait to see what God has in store for us.

Till next time....

What Have I Done?

Have you ever agreed to do something and then wonder what you were thinking? That is exactly where I am right now.

You see, I don't write. I don't journal and I rarely take notes. So why have I agreed to blog?

I am willing to bet that God will reveal the answer to this question somewhere down the line.

As if that is not enough, I also agreed to B90X. Look it up KFA men. The challenge is coming. I believe that you are up for it.

Let's take this journey together. I believe that God has big plans for us.

Till next time...
